rob's opinion
i originally noticed this item on slashdot. i checked out some of the comments and people were quite excited about the newest mandrake release, echoing sentiments i've seen here from several geek.com readers when we highlighted the release of mandrake 7.2.
mandrake 8.0 looks to be a very nice release. if you are considering linux, i'd give mandrake a try just for the font anti-aliasing alone. man, it's so about time for that. blocky fonts drive me nuts, and that's actually the main reason that i don't use linux as a desktop more regularly, if you can believe it. now i may actually get off my butt and put together these two linux boxes i have with their guts strewn all over my floor in disarray, much like my life has been of late.
it appears to me that mandrake has won the hearts of the linux faithful for desktop use, while slackware and debian pick up the server side, with red hat out there for commercial/mainstream users who want a standard platform to run things on with plentiful support options. does that sum things up in the linux world nowadays?

funny…(3:32pm est fri apr 20 2001) … how linux distribution vendors advertise their products when they are not responsible for the content! as for font aliasing as an example: #6 that means it's not really a mandrake feature as everyone who downloads the 4.0.3 version will get the xft extension which makes font antialiasing possible… (nothing against mandrake, i don't know it.) |

yada yada(5:14pm est fri apr 20 2001) . . . .and if you're like me and don't have access to broadband you can buy the cd's from cheapbytes for about $4. matter of fact i'm looking now at the mandrake 7.2 and redhat 7.1 discs i got not too long ago. i never got around to installing them why? none of the software i have works on linux, every install seems “some assembly required” to get it working, x-windows for the most part looks just like 95-98 and yes i know about the ten zillion versions out there, and trying to find current (or in some cases any) drivers for your hardware can be a pain. lastly it's very hard to get sound technical advice and posting on bulletin boards or message lists usually gets either juvenile rants or conflicting and wrong answers. but hey linux is fast for doing– something, and can do all kinds of– things, and even though most people can't figure linux out they must all be a bunch of idiots who aren't entitled to use computers because if they did they would know that the only thing that matters is just that it's not made by microsoft. i got a harley-davidson to sell you it's an overweight and obsolete piece of junk that nobody else would build, but since it's not japanese it's the greatest thing on two wheels. want it? – by ~~~~dos rules! |

re: laptop installation of linux(8:16pm est fri apr 20 2001) i read an article earlier today (sorry, i forgot where) regarding this very issue. he recommended mandrake's distribution because it is compatible with almost everything. heck, it even recognized my geforce2 card without me having to do a thing! since mandrake's 8.0 version is out, i'd grab the first copy of it i could. even with version 7.2, i've had no problems with any hardware (worthless winmodems excepted, of course). mandrake's site, lists all pcmcia peripheral compatibilities. – by lt cox |

difference?(10:04pm est fri apr 20 2001) i have yet to actually try linux… but i'd like to know before i dive in… are there any significant differences between red hat and mandrake or is it small things (ie kernel version #'s, a different setup gui, etc.) or is there actually a big difference in what one offers over the other? thanks for any info… – by milhouse |
no real difference….(10:12pm est fri apr 20 2001) there really isn't a major difference in the linux distros. it's just about the same as buying this m$ machine with so and so software included or that m$ machine with so and so other software included. that, and they might have different window managers (i haven't seen what the others have, just the mandrake i have installed, which has less than the 11 8.0 has). other than that, the kernel # should be on the box, etc. the setup routine might be a little different too – again, i've only installed mandrake. – by me, too |

sigh(3:03am est sat apr 21 2001) what can i say? i have to admit you have a point. yet, after all your attempts at making it sound pathetic, i still see nothing wrong with fiddling with your os. sure its not for everyone but some people enjoy trying to get the maximum performance possible out of their machines. this is no different than people building hot rods. fiddling and tweaking their cars to get a tiny bit of extra performance. to the “normal” people driving minivans, this seems like a ridiculous waste of time. linux is not an os for the average user and imo it will never be. it's awesome for servers and enthusiasts but the joe averages out there will just not be interested enough to spend any time on it. unless windows suddenly blows up and never comes back, most people will stay with it. – by pherthyl |

oooh, flame bait :)(6:02am est sat apr 21 2001) lighten up guys :) i'm sorry, but i happen to like tinkering with my computer. maybe it's cos i'm a geek. i dunno… have you never spent an afternoon trying to get an awkward hardware combination working, or troubleshoot some dodgy software? and you're posting on geek.com? well, ok… let me rephrase that last post. i'd like to play with a program that teaches me something while i'm setting it up. it'd be nice to have an os which actually gives you some idea of how it works before it starts crashing. when it does crash, i'd quite like to be able to say 'i know why it did that, it's because i did so-and-so', rather than 'bsod. damn' and hit reboot. ok, i know this isn't for everyone. i also accept that this isn't a good idea all the time – sometimes it's more important to have an os that will install quickly and smoothly – even if it crashes every ten minutes… but hey, that's life – by charmaka |
easy install(6:14am est sat apr 21 2001) i was just at mandrake's forum, and a user posted her experience installing 8.0. she went from windows to a dual-boot machine, with internet access, in 25 minutes. 25 minutes!! and only one reboot, i must add. it was a simple matter of clicking “next” and “ok” 7 or 8 times, and she was completely installed. i can't wait! – by lt cox |

re: wine(9:21am est sat apr 21 2001) oh, that's how to run the stuff on linux they don't make the software written for linux you instead have to install another program to make the software think it's running on windows. (3.1 at that!?!) if linux is so great, then why aren't the developers making scads of ports just for linux? saying you can run the popular software on your linux box by installing a windows interpreter kind of defeats the whole purpose–i thought windows was the evil useless bloated code that serves no purpose, yet it looks like it's needed. (flame bait! flame bait!) and lt. cox: i ain't your bro, and if you get more positive on mandrake i think you'll need to sign up for corporate sponsorship. btw, what did daisy have for lunch, anyway? – by dos is it!!!!!!! |
linux is about as practical as a dune buggy(10:02am est sat apr 21 2001) it is older than nt and has nowhere near the marketshare. it hit popularity about a year and a half after nt did and still is nowhere near where nt was a year and a half ago. nt had all the problems linux had (hardware incompatibility, lack of compatible apps, awkard first versions), yet rose far above linux with less hype and marketing. linux has failed. time has proven than linux is not meant to be a market leader, just a toy for people who want to spend months getting their systems working. hot rod?…no. running linux is not like building a hot rod. hot rods usually run better than commercial cars. a linux machine is more like a dune buggy. dune buggies are good for only one thing, off road racing, and you would never want to use them for anything else. dune buggies outperform mainstream cars in an unusual circumstance instead of an ordinary one (like the freeway). linux outperforms windows nt/2000 only on cheap computers instead of mainstream modern servers, workstations, or pc's. if given the choice, i am sure that most people would prefer to have a mercedes or corvette over a dune buggy, hence why linux has failed! – by sb |
re: sb(11:06am est sat apr 21 2001) too true, i keep wondering on the hype on all the *ix variants from freebsd to linux and the even earlier stuff like minix and zenix. it's all rehashing of unix, which itself has roots going back to the late sixties. what i would really like to see is a new operating system period. one that throws out the book on unix and starts anew. i had some high hopes for be, but that also seemed to have some basis in unix or next–but darn it was a friendly system to work with. now even apple has tossed their operating system and gone unix. if linux and all it's variants really were the *big thing* then i don't see why all the software developers haven't seen the light and started offering their programs in linux ports for the “higher performance” and “greater reliability” that is so often touted for it. the biggest thing i ever saw for linux was it was ostensibly free, or really cheap compared to the others. however, in a lot of the early distros it seemed you got what you paid for. the new stuff is better, but still a far cry from being either easy to use or having wide driver support. my next operating system will most likely be windows 2000, as 98 has gotten long in tooth and me is a veritable bomb. i'll eventually get the licensed version of be and probably even mandrake 8.0, but more as tinkering toys for my spare time than for serious work. – by c: = dos! |
am i just missing something here?(11:44am est sat apr 21 2001) i'm not sure why you people keep discrediting linux. there is no reason to say that “linux has failed,” or that “it will never be as good as windows,” etc. i've frankly gotten bored with using linux distributions and am now working on my own. linux is not hard to use, that is, if you're not coming from a windows environment with a friendly point and crash interface. remember getting your first commodore? did anybody learn how to program basic? wasn't that fun? do you think that a commodore was any harder to use than a windows machine is now? if you're not used to using windows then using something besides windows isn't that hard. linux is getting continually better and continually gaining more marketshare. those who say that linux has already failed are fools. with each iteration of linux distributions comes easier and easier to install interfaces. i remembered trying redhat 4.2 for the first time. i got it installed, but it wasn't easy. i then remember trying 6.1 on a friend's machine. i recommended that he switch over to slackware because of the redhat installation being graphical. maybe it is just the geek in me that makes me toy with my computer. sure, i do real work on my machine. doesn't mean i want to work all the time. just sitting back playing tuxracer, gltron, and quake are awesome. and running counterstrike under wine is beautiful. am i just missing something here? (cont'd)(11:46am est sat apr 21 2001) to the fool who says linux has been around longer than windows nt, microsoft windows 1.0 was released 20 november 1985. windows nt was first displayed at comdex in october of 1991. linus torvalds bought his first machine based on an intel architecture, a 386 dx33, on 5 january 1991. in september 1991 linus torvalds pulls together what he dubs version 0.01 of linux. linux has come a long way and at a much faster pace considering what has been coded from scratch. when microsoft first started making its gui for windows nt, it had its code for its previous versions of windows to help. linux guis are all from scratch. if you ask me, i think linux is doing a very impressive job. my sources for these postings are: and glyn moody's rebel code. isbn 0-7382-0333-5 – by errorlevel |

back to the topic(11:08pm est sun apr 22 2001) i wanted to see what the linux craze was so i did some tinkering around and bought myself corel linux 1.0, it sucked. assuming version 1.2 (second edition) would be better, i plunked down a couple more $ (yes, i know, real linux users don't buy, they download, but i had a slow modem at the time). it was just the same crap. i had to do several work arounds and read through newsgroups just to get it working (once corel finally sent me the cd, since it wasn't in the box and i'd ordered it online). it was a nice attempt but they 'bastardized' it too much. i finally gave up on corel and downloaded linux-mandrake 7.2 and what a difference. mandrake is the version of linux that users have been waiting for. 7.2, while not perfect, is as functional as windows 98se, as stable as nt 4.0 (or win 2000) and the price is perfect. it has it's own update (similar to windows update) and sets up xdsl connections, nics, etc., fast and easily. i even got it to install properly on my omnibook 5700 (p166 laptop) with no problems. all the software you need is there and yes, there are linux games: q3, tribes, railroad tycoon, etc. sorry for the long email but when i see a great product like this, i have to promote it. – by g. frederick |

stability(5:47am est mon apr 23 2001) i used w2k on my comp. i got rid of it when it crashed during normal stress test. in fact, it crashed so hard it wouldn't work anymore. on the other hand, i have ran numerous stress-tests on my linux (on a same machine). those tests have been alot more demanding than the one that crashed w2k. linux has passed every single test with flying colors! as for market-share. isn't linux's share as a network-server 20-30% and rising? and isn't it one of the most popular web-servers in the world? or was it the most popular… oh yeah, linux has failed…. – by janne |
comment record(11:22am est mon apr 23 2001) i wonder which geek.com stories generate the most comments and the most verbose comments? seems that linux-mandrake is pretty high up there. this may be a geek record in the making … – by nom$kissass |

linux, unix, windows, etc.(11:27am est mon apr 23 2001) just to clarify a few points regarding market share. windows dominates the market on the desktop and consumer systems. nt is used for servers of small to medium sized networks. unix(linux is just another type of unix) dominates the mission critical server and large(enterprise) level server market(about 55-60%). unix(other flavors than linux)has been around since the early 60's. – by steve t. |
one note…(12:05pm est mon apr 23 2001) unix did not come about until 1969 when ken thompson started work on it at bell labs. – by errorlevel |

mandrake 8 is fantastic!(12:10pm est sat may 12 2001) ive used a bunch of oss in the past decade. the majority of the time with macs, starting with 6.08 all the way up to 8.5. ive lost count of how many times ive crashed those systems. i went to college and got a pc . . it came with win98se2. a lot of software, thank god, but, it still crashed. and ran like crap. i got a copy of win2k. that is much much more stable, but a couple of things dont work. i then decided to try linux. i bought a book, install redhat in a weekend or something like that. it came with redhat7. rh7 was a big mistake. pain in the butt to use. im just learning linux, and i want something easy to use. i then heard about mandrake's distro. i got a copy of mandrake 8. i dont think be needing to use win2k much anymore. mdk8 just simply works. install was fast! my sound card worked! everything worked, except my shitty winmodem. grrrr…. mandrake 8, at least from a newbies perspective, is lightning fast and rock solid. great system! i like rpmdrake for installing stuff. and the userdrake program is the way it should be done. i dont have the time to learn text commands right now. for a anyone who wants to get rid of windows, i highly recommend mandrake 8. – by slammer |

i got it.(3:31pm est fri jun 01 2001) ok, i got mandrake 8.0 installed on my second hard drive and i am loaded for bear! the good: 1) the install was very smooth. more automation, but advanced users can still get in there and tweak the process. 2) my geforce2 mx vid card was recognized. i got a nice display straight out. cool beans. 3) my onboard sound was recognized! first time i ever had sound at first boot with linux. 3) there are drivers for my lexmark 2050 printer. yes! the bad: Pavilion dv6 network controller driver. 1) yes, i've got usb, but it's not obvious to me how to have my usb modem recognized as a modem. got to work on that. 2) i was able to print a test page, and felt godlike until i saw the output. eww. completely unreadable. gotta work on that. 3)it takes over 2 minutes to boot to the desktop. win me on the same machine boots in twnty seconds. plus with me my modem and printer work right away. :::sulk::: i want to be wintel-free, but i'm not there yet. – by toolpackinmama |

forced to give up wintendo(7:15am est sun jun 10 2001) i like the graphical, easy to operate, gaming environment m$ offers. however, when i started doing serious stuff (like parsing big text files) for work, i found that i need things like awk and shell scripting in a scalable, non-limited way. virtually impossible on wintendo. my girlfriend still reads her e-mail on bills software, but i run everything on linux. it's now i realise what i have been missing all these years. please let's have even better graphical – pnp installations. mandrake bravo! – by alinuxenduser |

linux question(4:55pm est wed aug 15 2001) where's the real 3d games like a simple descent iii, or quake ii, or maybe even unreal for linux, we need more communication programs too like that stupid a*# aol for linux. we all need to get rid of those, very buggy,3 second crashes, retarded, backwards working, don't know how to create better patches for there software, me??what is m.e. sounds like a fag version update. microsoft and thier xp what x.p. “xtra pu$$y” or something. mna linux will take over the fucking world soon and leave bill gates ass at home filling out applications to come work for the linux distribution. and why is it everytime i go look at the news on the web i see “microsoft and linux are at it again” because microsoft thinks thier bad asses and don't do crap but make low based firewalls that just accepts every virus that comes through, while linux is busy drinking wine and smoking the best blunts celebrating the good times of winpos 2000 or that dumb m.e. what we need is a good breeze of nice software to sit in front of microsofts shelfs and just watch microsoft lose money. linux baby linux oh yeah everyone who uses windows…….get some mandrake linux 8.0 and say goodbye to microhos – by [email protected] |
